Cutting Edge Technology BANNER

TECH PICTURE

West Cancer Center & Research Institute offers a broad range of advanced cancer technologies, spanning precision medicine, radiation oncology, imaging, interventional radiology, surgery, and clinical research.

Some of the most notable include:

Cryoablation

Margaret West Comprehensive Breast Center at West Cancer Center & Research Institute has played an important role in advancing this technology. West participated in the landmark ICE3 clinical trial, which evaluated cryoablation in women with early-stage, low-risk breast cancer. Five-year results showed a 3.1% local recurrence rate among patients with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative disease treated with cryoablation followed by endocrine therapy. Instead of surgically removing the tumor, cryoablation uses a small probe and extremely cold temperatures to freeze and destroy cancerous tissue. The procedure can be performed without traditional breast surgery, offering potential benefits such as a shorter procedure and recovery, minimal scarring, preservation of breast appearance, and reduced disruption to daily life.

MRI-Guided Brachytherapy

West Cancer Center & Research Institute was the first in the region to offer MRI-guided brachytherapy for cervical cancer. MRI imaging provides enhanced visualization for highly precise placement and delivery of internal radiation, particularly for gynecologic cancers. The latest generation of devices called the Geveva Applicator System allows for even more precise delivery of radiation for certain Gynecologic Cancers.

Early Access Program (EAP)

West Cancer Center & Research Institute was selected by the FDA to be the first in the Mid-South to offer a revolutionary drug-Daraxonrasib, to treat metastatic pancreatic cancer for patients that qualified. Patients from across the globe were referred to West, which is a testimony to the reputation of our clinical research program and the physicians leading the study.

Advanced Radiation Therapy

West offers technologies including Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), allowing radiation to be shaped and precisely directed at tumors while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

Advanced PET Imaging

West offers specialized imaging including PSMA PET for prostate cancer, NetSpot/Ga-68 PET for neuroendocrine tumors, FDG PET/CT and Axumin PET, helping physicians more precisely locate, stage and monitor cancer.

Image-Guided Tumor Ablation

Using CT, ultrasound or MRI guidance, interventional radiologists can place a probe directly into certain tumors and destroy cancer tissue through heating or freezing, providing a minimally invasive treatment option for selected lung, liver and kidney tumors.

Y-90 Radioembolization

Tiny radioactive microspheres are delivered directly into blood vessels supplying liver tumors, providing highly localized radiation while helping spare surrounding normal liver tissue.

Advanced Image-Guided Interventional Oncology

West also offers procedures such as portal vein embolization, tumor embolization and other minimally invasive treatments that use sophisticated imaging to target disease with greater precision and potentially shorter recovery times.

Precision Medicine & Molecular Profiling

Advanced molecular and genomic testing can identify the unique characteristics driving a patient’s cancer and help physicians select targeted therapies and clinical trials.
